Três Lendas Brasileiras is a piece for vibraphone and guitar by Sérgio Assad, which is based on Brazilian myths about three creatures: I. Curupira – a (male) jungle genie/ Demon of the Forest that protects the animals and the trees of the forests. It has red hair with the capacity to ignite and turn into fire and backward feet to confuse hunters. Hates hunters and lumberjacks. It was the first figure in the history of folklore to be documented in Brazil. II. Cuca is one of the main mythological beings of Brazilian folklore. She is popularly known as an ugly old alligator-woman who kidnap and eats naughty children. It is a personage that the mothers use to make their children sleep. That it why Sérgio Assad inserted the lullaby on the music box. Mothers tell their children if they don’t sleep the cuca will show up to take them away. III.
