★★★ My playlist with selected movements from BACH cantatas: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750): HERZ UND MUND UND TAT UND LEBEN (BWV 147) (Heart and mouth and deed and life) 10. movement: Chorale Bach composed this church cantata in 1723 during his first year as Thomaskantor, the director of church music in Leipzig. Two stanzas of Martin Jahn's chorale “Jesu, meiner Seelen Wonne“ (1661) close the two parts of the cantata in an identical setting. The melody is by Johann Schop. This music became famous in a piano transcription by Dame Myra Hess as “Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring“. Jesus bleibet meine Freude, Meines Herzens Trost und Saft, Jesus wehret allem Leide, Er ist meines Lebens Kraft, Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne, Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne; Darum lass ich Jesum nicht Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht. (Martin Jahn, 1661) Jesus shall remain my gladness, Essence of my heart, its hope; Jesus from all grief protecteth, He is of my life its strength, Of mine eyes the sun and pleasure, Of my soul the joy and treasure; Therefore I will Jesus not From my heart and sight allow.
