Liz Koch, author of The Psoas Book, explains and demonstrates unraveling the Psoas muscle on land using a simple kitchen chair. Using a chair for unraveling the core Psoas offers a fun, creative way of counteracting every day tension patterns, eliciting a dynamic responsive nervous system, and maintaining a juicy Psoas. The Psoas, as messenger of the Central Nervous System, expresses not only our survival/fear response but also our desire to thrive and innovate. Unfortunately the typical social habit of sitting static in poorly designed chairs for extensive periods of time contributes to not only a loss of vitality and a lack of proprioceptive awareness along the spine, but a Psoas “filet mignon“ that eventually dries and shortens. Exploring the primitive C of the spine utilizing small undulations, wave motions, and breath is a pleasurable nourishing way of hydrating and lengthening the Psoas. Playing on a chair (just like a child naturally plays on furniture) is a simple way of challenging our proprioception through a variety of angles to gravity. Add fluid movement and you have a recipe for unraveling tension patterns, softening the Psoas, and rejuvenating the spine for increased health and vitality.
