About the Work '1972’ tells the story of the characters in and around a nightclub in the impoverished HaTikva (The Hope) neighborhood of southern Tel Aviv. The 1970s were a tumultuous period for Israeli society. After decades of social, political and economic discrimination, Israel’s streets exploded with mass demonstrations as Oriental Jews (Jews from Arab Countries) demanded social justice from an establishment controlled by European Jews. The social protests were led by the Israeli Black Panthers who drew inspiration from the American Black Panther Movement. For young and poor Oriental Jews who lacked social mobility, the nightclub was an oasis and an escape. Here they were not factory workers or maids, but kings and queens. ‘1972’ is the story of their reality and their struggle. The soundtrack for the work consists primarily of Israeli songs from the 1970s.
