New York, 1950. Ray, a former railroad worker looking for a job, arrives in Bowery, one of the poorest avenues in Manhattan where alcoholism is omnipresent. In this territory where precarious workers, homeless people, sex workers and people tragically pushed to the margins of society rub shoulders, Ray sinks into alcohol, the inevitable remedy for the nights spent on the streets and the lack of food. His path crosses that of Gorman, an old regular in small, seedy bars. Despite their friendship, Gorman does not hesitate to take advantage of Ray and his savings. On the Bowery is above all a portrait of the white trash underbelly of New York, a demystification of the American dream in a way that almost no one has yet represented in cinema.
