Magma is a French prog band formed by classically trained drummer Christian Vander in 1969. The group is famous primarily for the creation of a new direction of progressive music, called “Zeuhl” (or, in simple terms, art-rock modern). This is the second album from the Kobai saga. Here, to the exotic music, Wander also added the artificial language of the planet Kobaya, which he synthesized from Slavic and Germanic roots. Starting from this album, all compositions are performed in the Kobai language, and the musicians freely speak it to each other in everyday life. “With our music we want to give people the opportunity to live. Some musicians in France imagine that music is a craft, but that’s not for me,” says Vander. “Music is life and death. Our group embodies in its work a synthesis of a single art, absolute communications comparable in scale to the construction of the pyramids.“ The work begins with understanding the symbolism of things, which for Wander lies, in particular, in the symbolism of Egyptian culture. Disclosure of what lies behind the everyday or subjective-historical understanding of judgments, concepts and signs, what constitutes their “supra-historical and supra-real meaning”, disclosure of the meanings inherent equally in individual ancient cultures and in European culture today - this is the key to penetrate into the essence of things and control them,“ says Magma. This is the path of mastering sounds and creating art that can evoke the “voice of eternity“ - the Universe. Their music is simple and complex at the same time. From jazz - complex harmonic improvisations, from European folklore - transparent and the pure intonations of folk melodies, the spiritual asceticism of instrumental developments, here are the techniques and stylistics of operas. Many believe that their ability to process folklore was borrowed from Bela Bartok. But the heavy, pronounced rhythm, moving from emphasized monotony to impulsive dynamism, symbolizing the step of the Universe towards “ naked soul“, comes from rock.
