As I've anticipated yesterday, today it's a very important day for Italy. 70 years ago, April 25, 1945, Italy was freed from nazi occupation with the German high command and Salò' Republic's surrender to the partisans. So, we call this day the “Giorno della Liberazione“ (Liberation Day), our personal Independence Day. In 1943, after italian surrender to the Allies, the country was divided in two. Forced to choose between the loyalty to the King or to the Duce, the greatest part of the italian Army chose to respect the oath to the Savoia Monarchy, despite the king and all military commanders had abandoned them escaping from Rome, allowing in this way tremendous massacres like the sinking of Battleship Roma or the Aqui Division mass execution in Cefalonia. Most of the italian soldiers afterwards joined to the partisans themselves. Note. One of the most famouses photos of this period rapresents a group of Granatieri di Sardegna's soldiers trying to defend Porta San Paolo in Rome from Germans supported by armed civilians and, more of this, two Semovente 75/18 Stay tuned, because it's not over yet for this day.
