A common myth you often hear is that only females in a lion pride do the hunting. The theory being that this is because male lions leave the pride at around the age of two or three and therefore have insufficient time to learn adequate hunting skills from their fellows. Nonsense! While it is true the females do the lions share of the hunting, this is not due to a lack of skill on the part of the male but rather a simple gender specific difference in priorities. The males are too busy patrolling territorial boundaries to hunt in front of our eager cameras! They are busy keeping other males away from the females and their children in order to prevent the famous infanticide, in which male lions will kill cubs below the age of six months. They are busy fighting off the encroachment of hyenas who will happily kill lions and their cubs at every opportunity due to intense inter specific competition, where two species are competing for the same finite resource: food! But as this video shows, male lions are certainly well equipped for battle and powerful hunters in their own right. The kings of the jungle! Able to take down a buffalo weighing around eight to nine hundred kilograms in a single blow with one swipe of a mighty paw before suffocating the buffalo with powerful jaws tightly clenched on the throat. Thankfully a quick and relatively painless death! Lions are more than capable hunters, often brought in to take down the bigger prey including giraffe and even elephant. They are the ultimate bad ass of the Bush. This myth that male lions cannot and will not hunt needs to be dispelled! @WooGlobe Verified (Original) *For licensing / permission to use: Contact - licensing(at)WooGlobe(dot)com #bigcats #lions #lionhunting #buffalo #animals #holiday #travel #adventure #safari #king
