Three hours ago, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 occurred in the Iranian province of Western Azerbaijan. The epicenter was near the city of Khoy, at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi). Severe damage to houses and buildings is reported both in the city itself and in the surrounding villages. There was a power outage in some areas. Iranian emergency officials said rescue teams were sent to the area. Hospitals were put on alert. Information about the victims and damage is being specified. Meanwhile, the Turkish Disaster Management Authority said no damage or casualties were reported in Van Province, which borders Iran. Khoy is a city in northwestern Iran, in the province of Western Azerbaijan, north of Lake Urmia. The population is about 185 thousand people.
