Mission Impossible was a wonderfully choreographed piece of 1960s television kitsch created by Bruce Geller. Originally produced by Desilu it switched to Paramount from 1968 onwards. The formula was simple and appealing: Find a tape recorder and an envelope in a trash can somewhere. Play the tape and internalise the vital instructions and photographs before the tape self-destructs (who knows why) with a puff of white smoke. Then brief your elite team of crime fighters before they go undercover wearing a cunning disguise of rubber masks and improbable moustaches (usually just the men).
