Interpretations are generally connected to the Jacobite rebellion of 1745 - assuming that the song depicts a conversation between two Scottish soldiers held captive by the English army. One version says one can return home (the high road), and the other will be executed and his soul will be transported back home to Scotland by the fairies (low road).
