The ancient fortified settlements of Yugra definitely are a spectacular phenomenon. There is no such thing anywhere else in the north of Eurasia. But why? Why did ancient hunters and gatherers of the north of Siberia spend so much time and effort on a complex of fortified structures? Kayukovo 2 is an ancient fortified settlement with a cruciform planning structure, formed by five main buildings. The entire settlement is surrounded by a defensive wall. The burnt-out remains of wooden structures that have preserved relatively well up to the present day allowed us to conduct a historical and architectural research. That’s how we got the first drawings of dwellings and outer fortification. This was the first attempt of scientific reconstruction, but it also required verification, because it’s a drawing where not a single pillar falls off the paper, not a single wall can be bent, not a single structure can be broken.
