Officers Shoot at Fleeing Armed Suspect Who Was Driving a Stolen Vehicle

* (Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only) * Charlotte, North Carolina — On Thursday, September 15, 2022, shortly after 5 p.m., officers were notified of a License Plate Reader hit for a stolen vehicle on LaSalle Street in the Metro Division. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at Onyx Street and Dundeen Street. The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Shaheed Covington, fled from the vehicle on foot armed with a firearm in hand. The suspect ran through a backyard still carrying the firearm. Multiple officers perceived an imminent threat and discharged their service weapons. The suspect was not struck, and there were no injuries to the officers or the suspect. The suspect surrendered to officers and was taken into custody. The firearm was recovered on scene. The CMPD Homicide Unit conducted the criminal investigation into this officer-involved shooting.
