Wales has become the first UK nation to reduce speed limits in built-up areas from 30mph to 20mph in an effort to reduce fatalities and noise pollution as well as to encourage people to walk or cycle. The Welsh Government said the new speed limits will cost £32.5 million, with the United Nations, environmental and road safety groups all backing the move and opposing politicians declaring it a “war on motorists“.
