He trained Yiquan under Grand Master Wang Xiangzhai in 1937. He came to fame in the 1940s with great conscientiousness and hard training in Yiquan after training for only three short years. He gained great favor with Grand Master Wang Xiangzhai at the time. He was granted the name of “Jixiang” in 1941 by Grand Master Wang Xiangzhai with the great expectation that he would promote this art in the future. Master Yao Zongxun advocated sports biomechanics, modern anatomy and athletic psychology as a theoretical basis in Yiquan training. He thought that martial arts practice should be combined with scientific theory. He had the courage to bring forth new ideas and constantly absorb the advantages of modern boxing into his training and entire teaching career. He studied modern sports science to enrich his knowledge in his traditional Yiquan development, effectively mixing modern and traditional techniques. Later in life, Master Yao Zongxun had also offered and shared his Yiquan training method with the National Swimming Team, the Beijing Football Team, the Beijing Track & Field Team, the Beijing Weightlifting Team and the Beijing Shooting Team as a reference and application in their training. Before passing away in 1985 due to cancer, he established the Beijing Yiquan Research Institute in 1984 contributing greatly to the study and propagation of Yiquan. Also, his classic book, Chinese Combat Martial Art; Yiquan, was published later around this time. The following video is a classic Yiquan demonstration by Master Yao Zongxun (1917-1985) in the early 1980’s. In this video, first, Master Yao Zongxun is demonstrating the Subdue Dragon Stance. Next, he continues demonstrating a variety of Testing Power techniques with moving steps, different styles of Release of Power, palm strikes, and freestyle Yiquan War Dancing with great harmonious bodily movement. It is an invaluable and inspirational resource for Yiquan practicioners. You are welcome to subscribe and sponsor my channel “Lineage Martial Arts”, much love guys.
