This E minor sonata has a structural mind of its own - opening with a quasi improvisational preludio-cum-toccata over an implacable pedal ’E’ which generates a struggle rich in harmonic fantasy. It’s followed by a rhythmically supple, melodically wistful not-quite Adagio, and then, as if re-inventing itself as a ’sonata da camera’, continues with two dance movements: a sturdy Allemanda and a skipping, if thoughtful, Gigue.
