Canada’s government has announced that it is seizing a giant Russian cargo plane, as part of sanctions against Moscow. The targeted Russian aircraft, an Antonov 124, is owned by Volga-Dnepr Airlines, which is part of the Canadian sanctions list. The plane has been grounded at Toronto Pearson Airport since Feb. 27, 2022, days after Russia launched its invasion in Ukraine. The large white and blue cargo jet had arrived in Canada on the same day sanctions were announced last February. According to Russian state media TASS, the plane was carrying a cargo of Covid tests from China. The aircraft had landed two hours before Canada closed its airspace to Russian aircraft, as per TASS. Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, who’s in Kyiv on a surprise visit, announced that Ottawa will send the assets of the plane to Ukraine.
