The Solent, Hampshire. At Southsea we see a large crowd of people on the beach watching 20 men starting off on a swim across the Solent to Ryde on the Isle of Wight (three and a half miles). The sea looks pretty rough. Several shots of the swimmers. English long-distance champion Cecil Dean is seen making good progress; the judges' launch is apparently unable to keep up with him! A large crowd waits at Ryde to see Dean arrive; he climbs up some steps to the quay and is handed a trophy cup by a lady. His time was just over two hours. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ.
