Although very famous nowadays, Joseph Haydn did not get much recognition during most of his career. He was employed by the House of Esterházy and so spent much of his time in the family's country estate, isolated from the newest trends in music, and so he devised many of his own, codifying the forms of the symphony and string quartet. Later in his life, inspired by two very well-received concert tours of England, he was inspired to write oratorios, after attending performances of some of Handel's works. The libretto was provided by Gottfried van Swieten, a Dutch diplomat, librarian (he invented the card catalog) and musical patron and promoter (he is seen in the play and film _Amadeus_ as a promoter and adviser to Mozart, and also promoted Beethoven). Van Swieten himself adapted the libretto from an earlier English one, originally offered to Handel (who rejected it for being excessively long) and whose authorship remains uncertain. Van Swieten also produced an English translation of his German version, but due to his poor command of that language, the result was rather awkward to perform, and the German version is now used almost exclusively. The text is taken from the Book of Genesis providing the recitatives, with choral texts from the Psalms, both taken from the German translation of the King James Version. Additional text is adapted from John Milton's _Paradise Lost_ . The piece was originally written with the English audience in mind, and so the English literature was used.
