JIMI HENDRIX INJURED ON TOUR - THE WALKER BROTHERS TOUR - APRIL 1967 - EPISODE 9 00:00. INTRODUCTION April 1967 saw the Jimi Hendrix Experience complete their first official UK tour, what was at that time, the standard British Pop Package Tour. 01:00. THE BRITISH POP PACKAGE TOUR Since the late Fifties these tours had been the standard method of taking pop to the masses. 02:02. CHANDLER’S DIRECT MANAGEMENT APPROACH Chandler had been shrewd enough to sign up the Experience as a support act on the tour, reasoning that the Walker Brothers, the headlining act, were breaking up and that their hearts would not entirely be on the task at hand. 02:53. MITCH MITCHELL “ Yeah, the infamous Walker Brothers tour – The Walkers, Engelbert, Cat Stevens, and a couple of opening acts. It was definitely, not our kind of audience – but then, what audience did we have at the time? 03:49. TOUR DETAILS Here’s the Line-up for all the concerts: the Walker Brothers; the Jimi Hendrix Experience; Cat Stevens; Engelbert Humperdinck; the Californians; and the Quotations, with MC Nick Jones. 04:53. SOON THE GIRLS FELL FOR JIMI The audience may have comprised fans of the Walker Brother, Engelbert and Stevens, but soon enough though, as electronics whiz Roger Mayer recalled, the girls fell in love with Hendrix. WALKER BROTHER TOUR HIGHLIGHTS 05:52. CARLISLE, ABC Cinema, Cumberland (PART 1) - 7 APRIL 1967 In the following numbers only ‘Purple Haze’ was distinguishable in the screams and cries of delight from the 2,000 fans. 08:52. CARLISLE, ABC Cinema, Cumberland (PART 2) The Jimi Hendrix Experience were next and I noted: ‘Backing fantastic, but this is a bad intro, I cannot hear a word he is singing!’ 10:07. ABC CINEMA, CHESTERFIELD April 8, 1967 This account of the Chersterfield gig by Stuart Penney provides some great historical perspective along with an eyewitness account of the night: 15:12. CHESTERFIELD TRIVIA According to a report in Disc & Music Echo (15th April, 1967 issue), Jimi required four stitches in his foot after a “fuzz-box incident” during the early Chesterfield show “but he was able to go on for the second house.” 16:12. LINCOLNSHIRE ECHO 20 APRIL 67 “A great guy on and off stage, Jimi Hendrix was in a very bouncy mood. His opening remark was: ‘I’m gonna put a curse on everyone so that all their babies are born naked.’ A remark which he obviously thought had some deep significance. 17:09. LINCOLNSHIRE CHRONICLE ARTICLE I have been threatened by the tour manager every night so far, but I’m not going to stop for him. I’ve been using this act all the way since I’ve been in Britain. There’s nothing vulgar about it at all. 19:24. NOEL REDDING The month-long Walkers Brother farewell tour which began in late March was our real turning point. It featured The Quotations, Nick Jones, The Californians, Engelbert Humperdinck (still with Gordon Mills), Cat Stevens and us. We had to crack England now or never, as Jimi’s work permit was running out. We paid for it. Its was hell. 20:28. THE CROWD REACTION WAS GETTING TOO FRIGHTENING TO BE FUN By now the crowds were making it tough to escape from the theatre. In Liverpool we had to wait nervously backstage while someone found a cabbie willing to force his way through the mob and collect us. #jimihendrix #jimihendrixexperience #noelredding #mitchmitchell #celebrity #JanisJoplin #brianjones #jimihendrixlive #heyjoe #purplehaze #likearollingstone #voodoo #voodoochild #voodoochile #rockmusic #wildthing #montereypopfestival #monterey #beatles #sgtpepper #hendrix #rock #rockstar #rockmusic #beatles #celebrity #celebrities #alicecooper #paulmccartney #carlossantana #ericclapton #davidgilmour #ericjohnson #jerrygarcia #joesatriani #keithrichards #petetownshend #woodstock References: ‘JIMI HENDRIX - STARTING AT ZERO’ By Leon Hendrix, Bloomsbury 2013 ‘Jimi Hendrix – Electric Gypsy’ by Harry Shapiro & Caesar Glebbeek, Heinemann, 1990. ‘Hendrix – Setting the Record Straight’ By John McDermott with Eddie Kramer, Warner Books, 1992. ‘THROUGH GYPSY EYES – My Life, The 60s, and Jimi Hendrix’ by Kathy Etchingham, Orion, 1998. ‘Are You Experienced? – The inside story of the Jimi Hendrix Experience’ by Noel Redding and Carol Appleby, Fourth Estate Ltd, 1990. ‘Jimi Hendrix – The Inside Story’ By Mitch Mitchell with John Platt, Harmony Books, 1990. ’Scuse Me While I Kiss the Sky - the Life of Jimi Hendrix, by David Henderson, Bantam Edition, October 1981. ‘The Inner Word of Jimi Hendrix’ by Monika Dannemann, Bloomsbury Publishing, 1995. ‘CROSSTOWN TRAFFIC: Jimi Hendrix and post-war pop’ by Charles Shaar Murray, Faber & Faber, 1989.
