Archie Shepp is a Black American jazz saxophonist. Shepp has remained a committed radical for his whole life. In the 1960s and 70s, he was an outspoken supporter of militant U.S. Black Power organizations such as the Black Panther Party, as well as pan-African socialist movements around the globe. In 1975, Shepp released this live recording of a performance at the Massy, France Jazz Festival on Uniteledis, the record label of the French Socialist Party. The title track 'U-Jaama' refers to the agrarian socialist development project then being carried out by the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) Afro-Socialist government of Tanzania led by anti-colonial activist and politician Julius Nyerere.
