Reviews of weather events, natural disasters, astronomical phenomena and wildlife around the world The sky is in smoke, mass evacuations, people are being taken out of hospitals and monasteries: fires have approached the capital of Greece, Athens. Footage from Athens looks terrifying: fire is approaching the city, the sky is covered in smoke. Forests are burning in the capital Greek region of Attica. Residents of eleven settlements, hospitals, monks of two monasteries - Pentelis and St. Ephraim - have been evacuated. Storm winds are reducing the efforts of firefighters to nothing, although five hundred people, 17 planes and 15 helicopters were involved in extinguishing the fires. The fires were caused by intense heat. Dry, hot weather has set in on the Balkan Peninsula, with temperatures above 35°C. Yesterday, the fire broke out in the suburbs of Athens, not far from the city of Varnava. In the evening, it approached the suburb of Dionysos, a couple of dozen kilometers from the center of the Greek capital. There are 510 firefighters with 16 foot teams and 152 vehicles, as well as a large number of volunteers, working at the site of the fire. If the fire crews managed to bring thirty fires under control the day before, then a day later the flames began to spread with renewed vigor. Hundreds of cars and residential buildings burned down. Then the fire moved northeast of Athens, reached the village of Grammatiko (1,500 residents), the ancient city of Marathon (7,000), the seaside town of Nea Makri (15,000) and Mount Pendeliko. Rescuers are evacuating local residents and patients from three hospitals. People are being placed in the Olympic stadium in Athens. - Half of Greece is in the red fire danger zone, - warned the Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias, adding: meteorologists' forecasts are pessimistic. The entire coming week will be “difficult and dangerous.“ The temperature will rise to forty degrees. The heat will be accompanied by strong winds. Forest fires in the summer are a common occurrence in Greece (in 2018, 104 people died in a fire that engulfed the suburbs of Athens). This year, climatologists note unusually hot and dry weather. The situation was also aggravated by an abnormally warm winter. Our channel continues to follow the developments with concern, let's wish Greece good luck in fighting the fire!
