Should hate crimes be treated differently or more severely than other crimes? The shocking murder of Sarah Everard has focussed national attention on violence against women. But should mysogyny be a specific hate crime? The charges brought against the suspect in the Sarah Everard case are for murder and kidnap. Is that sufficient? Or should the murder and kidnap of a woman be treated differently from the murder and kidnap of a man? If misogyny were a hate crime, what would it cover? Whistling and cat calls on the street? Lecherous remarks? By whose/what standard is this to be judged? More broadly, how is it possible to know how much a person’s actions are motivated by misogyny or any form of hate? Are all domestic abuse cases mysogynistic?
