This is among the most classic of Irish jigs, written in the mid 1850s. The lyrics recount the story of a young man who leaves his home town to make his fortune. Along the way he gets drunk, impresses some lasses, gets robbed, gets ridiculed for his accent, sneaks onto a ship to Liverpool, gets ridiculed for his accent again, and finally gets into a fight and beats up some Englishmen to defend Ireland's honor. Slainte indeed!
