Thanks for watching! ---------- Travel Series Episode 2: In this episode, I invite you to travel with me on a Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 717-200, as we travel from Honolulu, Hawaii, to the beautiful rainforest community of Hilo, Hawaii . All footage presented in this video was filmed on October 11-12, 2021. The full flights seen in this video were previously seen on my channel here: Honolulu-Hilo – Homer-Anchorage – ---------- Hilo, Hawaii: Hilo, Hawaii is a city surrounded by awe-inspiring beauty, engulfed by a tropical rainforest climate, it holds claim to the title of rainiest city in the United States. Some portions of the city receive over 200 inches of rain per year. To put that into perspective Seattle, Washington receives around 35 inches of rain per year. Located on the northeastern side of the island of Hawaiʻi (aka: The Big Island), 65 miles east of Kona, Hilo offers breathtaking natural beauty plus all the amenities of a vibrant town. On the geographic flip side of the volcanic Kohala Coast, the region is blessed with dramatic waterfalls, fertile rainforests, and blooming gardens. It’s also home to Hilo International Airport and is a convenient stop on your way to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, located 45 minutes south. A busy farming and fishing area in early times, Hilo evolved into a commercial center for the sugar industry in the 1800s. Downtown Hilo was built around its crescent-shaped bay and became the seat of county government. Today, Downtown Hilo is a charming town offering museums, art galleries, shops and restaurants. Touring the area you find fascinating gardens, information about the terrifying tsunamis that nearly swallowed Hilo in April of 1946, breathtaking vistas, black sand beaches, and more beauty than should be allowed for a single city. On rare clear days the city is backdropped by Hawaii's three tallest mountains. Maunakea, Maunaloa and Hualālai. To taste some of Hawaiʻi’s exquisite produce or buy local crafts, try the Hilo Farmers Market in Downtown Hilo. See more local culture when you browse the art at the East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center. Or, purchase a Hawaiian keepsake at one of Hilo’s many popular local shops. As mentioned, Hilo also has plenty of natural beauty, too. The Liliʻuokalani Gardens is a peaceful respite and features Japanese-style fishponds, pagodas and rock gardens on its 30 acres, while Wailuku River State Park is home to the 80-foot Waiānuenue (Rainbow Falls) and Peʻepeʻe Falls. The Hawai‘i Tropical Botanical Garden is a must see as one of the top rated gardens in the United States. And Akaka Falls State Park is only a few minutes away, where you'll find one of the most beautiful, easily accessible, rainforest waterfalls in the world. All of these locations are featured in this video. Whatever your itinerary, a visit to Hilo is worth the trip to experience an authentic taste of the island of Hawaiʻi. With that all said, I invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy 30 minutes of peaceful, relaxing shots, as we travel to, from, and throughout, Hilo, Hawaii!
