Thangka, an ancient Tibetan Buddhist art, refers to brightly colored paintings on fabric usually depicting a Buddha, religious scene, or mandala. Thangkas, imbued with symbolism and fables, are typically used for personal meditation or instruction of monastic students. Other larger ones can be displayed on a monastery wall as a part of religious festival. It usually takes one painter — or several — months or even years to complete a thangka piece, as it not only demands finely honed technique, but great patience through meditation.
