Doon had been hit by a car. He lay motionlessly, revealing his life force only by a subtle rise and fall in his chest. He was still breathing. As we lifted him he cried out, but then fell silent and remained so for several days. Due to head trauma, Doon was unconscious when we laid him on the treatment table. We treated him for pain and we were mainly concerned about whether or not he would ever regain consciousness. So we were utterly delighted when, by his second day, he was able to swallow when fed using a syringe. Even that swallow reflex indicated progress, healing. By the third day he showed us a major breakthrough: Doon was able to eat completely on his own, and within a few days was able to stand on wobbly legs.
