The speaker of Canada’s House of Commons has resigned after making a controversial statement. Former speaker Anthony Rota's resignation came less than a week after he praised a Ukrainian man who served in a Nazi unit during World War Two. Mr Rota praised Nazi soldier Yaroslav Hunka as a hero while recognising a number of Ukrainian-Canadians. The group was given a standing ovation in parliament during a visit from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. Mr Rota apologised for the incident after a Jewish Human Rights Group found the 98-year-old served as a member of the Waffen-SS “Galicia” Division or the SS 14th Waffen Division.
