Ok after many years of questions, here's how they do it in the movies: They make 35 spiderman suits for one movie alone. Only a hand full of these are made with a removable mask. The suits with removable mask are only used for the shots where Tobey Maguire does not wear his mask. As soon as he puts the mask back on, they cut to another shot where the actor wears a spider-man costume with attached mask. Once the mask is on, it's even likely that Tobey isn't the actor inside the spiderman costume any more and he's replaced by a stunt-man. The removable mask is a good choice for people that use the suit mostly without mask. The beautiful choice is still the attached mask though. Moreover the detachable hood is slightly less durable, since the neck area needs to be stretched out the most every time the suit is worn.
