AI is expected to revolutionize healthcare and new applications are continually appearing. This presentation will examine some of the current and future challenges and opportunities for AI in healthcare, taking a human factors and safety science perspective. Human factors considerations have included issues around and how to best integrate AI into clinical workflow and support human decision making. Methods for analyzing AI-human interaction will be discussed, ranging from laboratory-based studies to new types of evaluations involving simulations and naturalistic testing. The presentation will discuss how such approaches need to be applied to ensure both the usability and safety of AI applications in healthcare.
