Musical Mix of composition ZZ Top - La Grange, Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky and songs of Ray Charles - Hit the Road Jack! Stills from the movie “Ray“. 2004 Stills from the clip ZZ Top - I Gotsta Get Paid (album “La Futura“) Hit The Road Jack is a song by Percy Mayfield, first performed in 1960. Best known for being performed by Ray Charles in 1961. The female vocals belong to Marge Hendrix, Charles' partner and mother of his child. The song is based on the dialogue of a woman who reproaches her man for not having a penny for his soul and demands that he collect his things and leave her house, and the response of a man who accuses the woman of being grumpy and promises to make up for lost time. Percy Mayfield composed the song in 1960. He recorded a demo (no music, only voice) and sent it to producer Art Roop. Percy himself barely performed due to facial injuries sustained in a 1952 car accident. He allowed Ray Charles to perform the song. For two weeks
