Steps Ahead was a jazz fusion group formed by vibraphonist Mike Mainieri in the 1970s. In the heydays the lineup consisted of Mike Mainieri, saxophonist Michael Brecker, pianist Don Grolnick, bassplayer Eddie Gómez and drummer Steve Gadd. They fused elements of jazz, R&B, funk and rock in one blend of jazz rock. The band was active during the 1970’s and 1980’s and fell apart in the nineties. They gave a reunion concert however during the 2005 North Sea Jazz Festival. This unique concert was recorded at the North Sea Jazz Festival, 14 July 1985 at the Congresgebouw, The Hague, The Netherlands, featuring Michael Brecker and the rhythm section of Weather Report: Victor Bailey and Peter Erskine.
