Hard to believe we are already at the one-month mark for our new series Diary of a Mad Reefkeeper. In the first part of our diary, Andrew has to take up Yalcin's daily routine as he is off and do some of the daily tasks like the daily water testing and adding of supplements after the testing is completed, as well as make sure that all of the equipment is running smoothly as well as the fun task of feeding everything. This last task entails more than putting a pinch of flake food into the tank. In part two, we do an in-depth discussion of the quarantine process and the equipment and testing that goes into preventing anything harmful from any of the display tanks. We also discuss the hows and whys necessary for each fish and coral to be adequately quarantined before it can be added. This entails more than simply a freshwater dip and copper as, over the years, Andrew has found that there are specific protocols that work for quarantining some fish and not others, and the goal is to document these differences so that all hobbyists can benefit eventually. In part 3, a significant moment has arrived as 45 fully grown SPS colonies have been grown out from frags by Randy and Devon of ARC. Some of these colonies are very rare “named“ types, and while Andrew is not concerned about adding named corals just to add them, he likes adding beautifully colored colonies to his aquascape. This was a rare opportunity to do so, and we are excited about how they fit in and do in the main display tank. Part 4 In part 4, Yalcin returns after a day off only to find that something unexpected has happened, and as usual, he steps in to save the day. We won't ruin the surprise here, but as all of us have had happen unexpected things are a big part of the hobby. Yalcin shows how being prepared can help prevent the unexpected from becoming a major disappointment. In part 5, with all the heavy lifting done and the new colonies in place, it is time for the best part of this tank and the hobby: sitting back and relaxing and enjoying the view. Have a great weekend, everybody. We enjoy your comments and suggestions, so please keep them coming and please subscribe. *************************** ☛ SUBSCRIBE for the latest *************************** ☘ GIVEAWAYS more!
