Russian troops did not allow the Iranian army to enter the territory of Armenia, despite the agreements between Tehran and Yerevan. The Iranian army was not allowed to enter Zangezur. Despite earlier reports that Yerevan and Tehran had reached an agreement on the deployment of Iranian troops in Zangezur, which should become a powerful counteraction to Azerbaijan and Turkey, the Russian side did not allow the Iranian army to enter the region. Allegedly, this is due to Turkey’s discontent. According to Azerbaijani media, Iran plans to build a military base in Zangezur to protect Armenia from a possible attack, as well as to control its neighbors Turkey and Azerbaijan.
