So we wanted to work around the concept of lingering on a specific play or moment in football. Every time we watch a replay it acquires a new dramatic and artistic meaning. “This led us to the idea of creating a sculpture of an instant within a match that the camera could pan around. Remembering the interlocking plywood models of dinosaurs we played with as kids, we hit upon the idea of creating a sliced modeled sculpture. Our pitch idea was to create four sliced sculptures of specific plays and move around them with the camera to show their beauty. “When we won the pitch we got to work creating the sculptures design. We chose four specific moments from Spanish teams in the Champions League and recreated them in 3D, plotting some basic camera positions. We asked our architect friend Juan Pablo Quintero to joins us in the research for material selection and assemblage methods. Together we worked out the orientation of the slicing of the sculptures in relation to the final movement of the camera. “We chose plexiglas as the material due to its wonderful translucent properties. Juan Pablo came up with the best way to assemble the figures, and after his CNC machine cut the pieces he worked with his team to assemble them. Each sculpture has between 400 and 550 pieces, so it was a lot of hard work, and many pieces were quite similar, so they had to print large reference maps to help them find the right position of each piece. “The resulting sculptures are stunning, each capturing a moment in time of controlled speed, power and high drama. Using Physalia's amazing custom motion-control rig that can dolly, pan and tilt, we where able to start the filming. To get the highest resolution possible, the camera shot frame by frame so it felt very much like stop-motion animation. Schedule: “We worked on the 3D sculpture design and R&D for materials for two weeks. Sculpture cutting and assemblage for eight days. Then nine labor-intensive days of shooting and two weeks of post.“ For Canal Spain Director of creative services: Ricardo Fernandez Chief of graphic department: Luis Regalado Producer of graphics department: Juanjo Martin For 8 de agosto Producer: Sergi Roda DOP: Marc Ambros Sculptures: Juan Pablo Quintero Motion-control engineer: Alex Farriol Physalia Studio: Pablo Barquin, Marcos Coral, Mauro Gimferrer, Belen Palos Lore&Jun: Lorena Medina, Nelson Martinez Toolkit Adobe Creative Suite, CNC machine, motion control rig
