Strong winds and severe thunderstorms hit the holy city of Mecca

Bouts of strong wind and severe lightning storms struck Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, causing widespread damage and casualties across the country. The cities of Mecca and Jeddah were among the worst affected. A video that went viral online captured the moment the famous Clock Tower overlooking the Holy Kaaba in the Grand Mosque of Mecca was struck by lightning. A large crane adjacent to the Grand Mosque was also struck by lightning, leading to a number of casualties, including potential fatalities. The intensity of the winds lifted pilgrims off their feet. Heavy plastic barriers were sent flying, and electricity poles began to lean precariously over roads. Authorities have stated that winds in the area reached speeds of 83kph and issued warnings to residents and visitors to take extra precautions.
