Prelude (BWV 846) J.S. Bach's C major Prelude from the first book of The Well-Tempered Cliavier was probably conceived as a keyboard excercise for his oldest sons. A simple Arpeggio study, the Prelude has become one of Bach's most recognizable works,. partly through the effort of Charles Gounod who used it has a the basis of hsi famous aria, Ave Maria. This arrangement consistently turns the argeggio figure inside out, a transcription technique by Bach himself. John King
