DEM HÖCHSTEN GOTT ALLEIN ZU EHREN, DEM NECHSTEN, DRAUS SICH ZU BELEHREN Heinrich Andreas Contius, originally from Halle in Central Germany, was the leading organ builder in the Baltic lands during the second half of the 18th century; his work was particularly appreciated by J.S. Bach. None of his instruments has survived in its original state, but Joris Potvlieghe (Belgium) began an exact reconstruction of the 1763 Contius organ in the St. Jacobs church in Riga (Latvia). In all its facets this new historic organ in the St. Catharina Church in Wondelgem (Ghent, Belgium) is unique. Beside the Contius organ in Leuven (Belgium) no other instrument by Contius has yet been reconstructed.
