The Jesuits, also known as the Society of Jesus, are a religious order within the Catholic Church that was founded in 1540 by Ignatius of Loyola and six companions, with the approval of Pope Paul III. The society is engaged in evangelization and apostolic ministry in 112 nations. The order is headed by the “Black Pope“ an unofficial nickname historically given to the Superior General of the Society of Jesus due to the power and influence he wields within the Church, second only to the Pope himself, and the black priestly garments worn by the Jesuits as opposed to the white papal vestments. It is not a term officially recognized by the Catholic Church. The current Superior General of the Jesuits is elected by the General Congregation of the Society and is tasked with leading the order in its various missions around the world. All members swear a blood oath to wage war on heretics and protestants by any means necessary. The oath of the black pope.
