Pan across colliery workings. (Dark shots). Voiceover describes this as the most terrible accident on the Wigan Coalfield since 1908. Another shot of the pit head and winding gear. A mines rescue man walks towards camera wearing breathing apparatus. People are gathered around the coal mine to hear the outcome of the accident. People walk out of the pit office. One woman appears to be crying. Another pan of the crowd. A woman is helped out of the office by two men. She appears to distraught even to walk unaided.
