Whole Foods has announced the closing of what the company refers to as its “flagship” store in San Francisco, blaming increased crime and drug use in the store and its surrounding area as the precipitating cause. And while there’s little question that crime and drug use are key issues in the neighborhood, the real reason for the store’s failure may be more nuanced.
