“The Sound of Music“ is based on the Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the memoir “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers“ written by Maria von Trapp. The book, published in 1949, recounts the real-life experiences of the von Trapp family, who were a musical singing group that fled Austria during World War II. Maria von Trapp's memoir detailed her time as a novice nun, her arrival at the von Trapp household as a governess, her relationship with Captain Georg von Trapp, and the family's eventual escape from Austria to evade the Nazis. The memoir gained popularity and caught the attention of Broadway producers. The stage musical adaptation of “The Sound of Music“ premiered on Broadway in 1959, featuring music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.
