Isaiah 53 is often referred to as the “forbidden chapter“ because it contains a highly controversial and contested prophecy about a suffering servant who will bear the sins of humanity. The chapter speaks of a figure who is despised and rejected, wounded and oppressed, and yet does not defend himself. The suffering servant is described as being “pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities“, and through his sacrifice, he brings healing and forgiveness. Despite the controversy surrounding the interpretation of this chapter, it has been seen by many as to point to Jesus.
