This was Pinsent and Redgraves first race. Steve Redgrave had come 2nd the previous year rowing with Simon Berrisford, but Berrisford had back problems. So Redgrave was given a new partner, the very young but already a world bronze medallist in the 4 , Matthew Pinsent . The Soviet union pair, the Pimenov twins, had a long history of success but had come 4th in the 1989 world championships.
