Throughout World War 2, there were a number of female concentration camp guards who were notorious for their evil and brutality. A number of them were executed for their terrible treatment of prisoners at camps such as Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen. But at Stutthof Concentration Camp a number of local women were recruited to work as SS guards in the camp. One of these women was Gerda Steinhoff who despite working at the camp for around a year was known for being a brute. Gerda Steinhoff was a 24 year old mother, and she went into the camp and would beat and execute prisoners on a daily basis. But she became notorious for her selections of prisoners who would go to the gas chambers at Stutthof and she was a shocking guard. But at the end of the Second World she was condemned for her evil actions, and she was executed on a huge gallows in front of a crowd of 20,000 people.
