Explore the decade of the 1840s with a series of photographs and images to document the times, coupled with popular classical music that premiered during the era, as heard in historic recordings. This first installment of the “Sights and Sounds of the Past“ is a continuation, of sorts, of my earlier 2-part series “Ultimate World's Oldest Photographs“, which documents the era 1823 - 1841. Heard in this installment is: Franz von Suppe's 'Poet and Peasant' Overture, here played by the Municipal Military Band (recorded in 1901), Felix Mendelssohn's 'Songs without Words', Op. 62, “Spring Song“, here performed by an unknown pianist (recorded in 1888), and Otto Nicolai's 'The Merry Wives of Windsor' overture, as performed by the New Symphony Orchestra (recorded circa 1924)
