The active volcano Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture in far southern Japan has erupted, the Japan Meteorological Agency reports. The agency noted that the eruption was explosive in nature and occurred in the Minamidake crater. For the first time since 2020, the column of ash and smoke rose to a height of 5,000 meters, while rocks and clumps of lava scattered as far as 1,300 meters. Authorities are warning local residents about the risk of ash fallout both in the vicinity of Sakurajima and at a distance from the volcano due to winds carrying ash and lava.
