In the summer of 1986, Joanna Stingray gave the band a Portastudio she had just smuggled into Leningrad. In a year and a half, the guys dramatically changed their musical style and finished the album. Audio engineer Vishnya soon persuaded Tsoi to do the mixing at his home studio. “I somehow felt immediately that nothing better would be created in this studio ever,“ he later remembered. Joanna Stingray offered to help the band release the new material in the US. Realizing that they would no longer deal with him, the engineer made a few copies of the tape, flew to Moscow, and handed them to his pals for bootlegging. When the guys found out about his deed, they had already become the Soviet Union's top band. Songs such as “Группа крови“ (Blood Type), “Спокойная ночь“ (Good Night), and a few others became huge hits.
