At 70% of global reserves, the country is by far the largest producer of cobalt in the world and is at the heart of the world’s mad scramble for the strategic mineral that is essential to the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that power smartphones, laptops and electric vehicles made by companies such as Apple, Samsung and major automakers. But an estimated 100,000 cobalt miners in the Congo use hand tools to dig hundreds of metres underground with no safety equipment. This informal slave-like army is big business, responsible for an estimated 10 to 25 per cent of the world’s cobalt production and about 17 to 40 per cent of production in Congo. Artisanal Congolese miners alone are responsible for more cobalt than any nation other than Congo itself, ranking behind only the country’s industrial mines. The structure of the supply chain is very lucrative for multinational giants, even as Congolese pay the highest price.
