If there is one way to make your rough mix sound immediately better, it's using a mix bus. The mix bus is a way to group and process your tracks—in this case your whole mix. Making a big picture adjustment to the entire song before you even start mixing immediately elevates your rough mix—you can ballpark a vibe and give it the glue it needs to start sounding like a finished project. In this video, mixing & mastering engineer Mario Borgatta takes you through a track he's mixing called “OVER IT!“ by koby, and demonstrates how he sets up a mix bus in Pro Tools, along with some of his favorite plugins and outboard gear for getting the job done. That said, everything he demonstrates can be achieved with the software and gear that you are most comfortable with. 00:00 Intro 00:23 Before & After 01:03 The Setup 01:30 Trim (Prime Studio Charly V2) 01:43 Intelligent EQ (Gullfoss by @SoundtheoryLtd) 02:30 Outboard Gear (SSL Fusion by @SSLvideos) 04:08 Compression (Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Class A) 05:25 Tape Machine (Ampex® ATR-102 by @UniversalAudio) 06:35 Broad EQ Adjustments #1 (API 550 B by @waves) 07:32 Broad EQ Adjustments #2 (Amek EQ 200 by @BrainworxAudio) 08:45 Safety EQ (Dangerous BAX EQ by @dangerousmusic) 09:16 Simplifying EQ (Pro-Q 3 by @fabfilter) 10:15 Soft Clipping (elysia alpha compressor by @BrainworxAudio) 11:22 Final Thoughts Check out Output's selection of FX plugins: More about Mario Borgatta: Follow him on IG: Listen to the finished track “OVER IT!“ by koby: Keep up with koby: #mixbus #mixing #musicproduction
